Mark Elliott, MD

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of two children to a child psychiatrist and a pain specialist nurse. After graduating summa cum laude/Highest Honors in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego, I received my MD from Weill Cornell Medicine in NYC, where I was one of the top 3 academic performers in my class (2013). I completed my adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry training at the University of California, San Francisco, where I was Chief Fellow in Child Psychiatry my last year. I then completed an addiction psychiatry fellowship at the University of Colorado in Denver.

My primary clinical expertise is psychopharmacology—the interface between human beings and mind-altering chemicals. I am an expert in the psychopharmacologic management of a broad variety of so-called ‘mental disorders,’ including what the DSM-V calls ADHD, addiction/substance use disorders, trauma/PTSD, anxiety and depressive disorders, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic illness, OCD, and sleep disorders. I’ve found that most people do not fit neatly into pre-labeled diagnoses, but rather have complex lives that require a more subtle, tailored approach.

I see myself as primarily working with people in a consultative role to help them find healing and bolster their resilience from the chronic trauma that most of us (some much more than others) have experienced in our lives. My patients and I work collaboratively to find ways to better themselves and achieve self-actualization using the large arsenal of tools at our disposal.

I have accumulated extensive training in a broad variety of traditional psychotherapeutic approaches, centering now on a relationship- and community-oriented approach, most heavily influenced by person-centered therapy, mindfulness strategies in general, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am actively seeking training in EMDR and AEDP as well. I try my best to integrate insights from all of these disciplines, as well as my careful attunement to my own patients, into my work. I am also exploring the role of psychedelic and/or entheogenic medicines in concordance with more ancient, traditional practices.
